The Coomera Cup hailed as great success!

Boats1What a great Radio Sailing regatta? The Coomera Cup 2022-2, hosted by Wynnum Manly Radio Model Yacht Club (WMRMYC), was held last weekend (28th and 29th of May).

This event was originally scheduled for late February 2022 earlier this year and had to be postponed due to the heavy rain and flooding.

A sense of "Deja Vu" was building in the week approaching the second take (2022-2) because it had been raining for three weeks. Would the event have to be postponed again?

The weather forecast was for the rain to stop on Friday 27th and a 'Sunny' weekend. What about the wind forecast? Saturday, light and variable south westerly and for Sunday a westerly wind with the pressure building during the afternoon. A quick check with the venue management (GCCC) reconfirmed that cars could not be parked on the very soggy grounds. That was going to be a challenge. The decision was made to proceed with the regatta.

Guess what?? The weather forecast was generally what happened.

Saturday greeted the 38 competitors (a record number of entries for the Coomera Cup)  with a bright sunny morning, light variable winds and very soggy slippery ground. Over the weekend, the slippery conditions caused a few of the competitors to take some heavy falls. Fortunately, no one was injured.

It was a challenging day, Saturday,  setting courses to suit the variable winds and waiting for sufficient wind pressure. The number of  races completed on Saturday was limited to 5.

The scoring system used for this regatta was the SHSS (Simple Heat Scoring System). This system consists of a number of qualifying rounds, followed by a cut into a Gold fleet and a Silver fleet. The Gold and Silver fleets then race off over the final set of races.

Sunday was again sunny and the wind pressure built during the day. Great racing conditions, and 8 races were completed. Competitors in both the Gold fleet and Silver fleet enjoyed the final series.

Big "thank you" to the volunteers who worked tirelessly changing the race track and working with an unfamiliar scoring system. Thanks to Paradise and Coomera clubs for the use of fleet boards, course boards and launching ramps etc.. Thanks to the new Eagleby club for the use of the regatta trailer and all of the regatta equipment.

Thanks to the competitors for showing good spirits under testing conditions.

Finally congratulations to the winners.
