South Qld DF65 Championship 11 Aug, 2018, Springfield Lakes

Link to Results

This was the second major event held by the Springfield Lakes club in just over a month, and was another positive outcome, and endorsed by Greg Torpy and Mike Jefferys in their remarks at the end of proceedings. In achieving this, we have to acknowledge the effort, as always, of the volunteers who front up and make it happen. In particular, David Black for the scoring, and Trevor Fisher as RO, but not forgetting all the other volunteers that gave up valuable time to help run this event. Observers were Patrick Collins, Shelley Heard and Andy Houselander, with Marjorie Gough calling finishes and Peter Sloan writing them down. Ian Geary had a few rescues to do in the rescue boat and Neil Spink kept us all supplied with coffee and tea. Also thanks to John Heard for the gazebo and other portable enclosures.

21 skippers from Springfield Lakes, Paradise Club and Wynnum Manly Club fronted up to the difficult conditions, 15 races were completed. There was wind all day. Not always what we might have wished for, as it varied from frequent direction changes (sometimes every couple of seconds) causing stalls and calamities while trying to negotiate markers, to down-wind nose dives during some of the strongest blusters. All boats sailed with what is now the almost-standard Springfield A+ rigs.

Also worthy of special mention is the set of 360 sails generously donated by Greg Torpy for the 11th place (mid-fleet) skipper, Julian O’Brien. Thank you Greg.

1               Greg Torpy           33

2               Mike Jefferys      46

3               Grant Lihou         74

While recognising that Greg Torpy and Mike Jefferys had quite low scores, there were 4 other skippers who also won a race. Well done to all participants for a splendid day of racing.

Thanks to Ian Geary for the terrific drone video footage of a couple of races. Race 8 can be seen on the QRYA YouTube channel here. Don’t forget to subscribe!!
