Queensland DF65 Championship 7-8 July

Queensland DF65 Championship 7-8 July, 2018, Springfield Lakes.

From a fleet of 25 registered, there was only 1 no-show and 3 skippers unable to attend the second day due to commitments. The weather was mostly fine on Saturday and fantastic on Sunday with variation in wind strength from the west and north-west, and stronger on Sunday. A total of 19 races completed.

It was the first time Springfield held a State Title and by all account it was a success. Special thanks to all volunteers who helped, as they make it happen. Trevor Fisher as RO, Ian Geary for terrific catering and management of the event, David Black for his tireless efforts with the scoring, Marjory Gough and Peter Sloan for calling and scoring, Patrick Collins for observing, Neil Spink for hot drinks, and Rod Maunder for rescues.

Finally a special thanks to Frank Schmidt for managing to join the club and participate while on a visit from Germany, and to Paul Martin who flew up from Sydney to participate, once again.

There were lucky draws for wine, a set of 360 sails generously donated by Greg Torpy for the 12th place (mid-fleet) skipper Les Maus, and a cup to the skipper considered by the president as the most appropriate for best and fairest for quietly going about the business of sailing, Norm Gough.

1st place, for the second year in a row, was Mike Jeffreys on 31 points. Mike sailed consistently well during the 2 days. The Perpetual trophy was presented by Ian Geary, President of the host Club

2nd place trophy to Grant Lithou on 44 points, for a consistent effort with only a couple of troubled runs.

3rd place trophy to Ian Smith on 71 points, and again it’s consistency that places these skippers where they finished.

Well done everyone.

Check the calendars in a few days and the NOR for the South Queensland DF65 Championships, on August 10-11, now moving from Carbrook to Springfield Lakes. Looking forward to another fun event.
