 Report on the Newport Classic

The Newport Classic IOM Regatta attracted 26 entrants from 8 clubs from Central QLD to Northern NSW.  The Moreton Radio Yacht Squadron revived the event after a few years’ hiatus and the response exceeded the expectations. Recent improvements in the local facilities, including landscaping of the foreshore, cafe’ coffee shop, serviced toilets and a floating pontoon, deemed the location too good not to share with the Radio Sailing community.

The weather conditions were exactly as forecast with the 8 knot southerly at registration time, dropping and clocking to the east, then to northeast as the morning progressed.  The first seeding race (up on the QRYA Youtube channel with others) was run in zero to five knots from a variety of directions.  The boat crew and Race Officer (Ian Ashe) were very busy in the run-up to lunch.

Lunch was at the adjacent Izba Café where we had seating in the shade with a view of the racecourse.  The lunch break started at 11:45 to allow the breeze to settle and it had the desired effect when racing recommenced at 12:30 p.m.

The breeze stabilised to 8 to 10 knots from the northeast and the buoys shifted little over the remainder of the day.  The weather was perfect for a competitive and enjoyable IOM A-rig event.

The full results are on the QRYA website. Greg Torpy (Wynnum Manly MRYC) convincingly took first place 10 points clear of Arron Farrar (Gladstone RCYC) with Doug Allen (Club Kawana RY) just two further points away.

Cr. James Houghton (MBRC) is the council representative for area and he presented the trophies to the winners.  James said he was impressed with the fleet and the sport itself, committing to further council support for the club and next year’s event.
